Discovering the landscape and wild beauty of the North Pennines
We'll
explore a peaceful, unspoilt landscape with a rich history and vibrant
natural beauty. It was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty (AONB) in 1988. It is a landscape of tumbling waterfalls,
sweeping moorland views, dramatic dales, stone-built villages and
snaking stone walls.
The
moorland landscapes of the North Pennines are some of England's wildest
places. They are home to some of our rarest wildlife and have an
unspoilt sense of naturalness and remoteness found in few other places
in the country.
Species-rich
upland hay meadows are one of the rarest grassland habitats in the
country. Rich in wildlife and steeped in cultural tradition, the North
Pennines holds some of the best meadows in the UK.
The
impressive landscape of the North Pennines – from High Force on the
River Tees to the sweeping valley of High Cup Gill above Dufton – are
the product of millions of years of geological processes. The worldwide
significance of the geology found here is recognised by the fact that
the North Pennines AONB is Britain's first European Geopark and a
founding member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
Your
guide will take you on a series of carefully planned routes over the
course of your stay which will help you to fully appreciate this
stunning and often overlooked part of Britain. Our specially devised
circular and linear walks allow us to tailor them to suit the ability
and inclinations of most walkers.
Walks
vary in length from 6 to 12 miles with high level routes and low level
options as weather dictates. We are flexible and although we will have
specific routes in mind for each day, walks can be selected from our
pre-surveyed selection to suit the inclination, interest and mood of
the group at the time. We consult with our guests daily to get the
right balance. There is always plenty to do in the area if you would
prefer not to walk everyday.
You
should be reasonably fit as there are some steep hill climbs on most
walks but these can be taken at a comfortable pace with stops as often
as required. If in doubt consult your doctor before booking.
